The Youngwood Volunteer Fire Department will host a Community Night Out, a three-day event planned in place of its canceled week-long carnival.
Set for July 9-11 at the fire hall, the event will focus on outdoor activities, save for a socially distanced bingo to be held inside.
“We have space to spread it out,” said Fire Chief Lloyd Crago.
The annual carnival, which can account for as much as a quarter of the department’s local fundraising revenue, was canceled when the company that has provided amusement rides for the event wasn’t available this year, Crago said.
A gun bash, another major income source, also was canceled.
“We’re hoping this makes up for a little bit of it,” he said of the Community Night. “We’re trying to bounce back a little bit. We’re hoping that people will be missing the carnival food and want to get out.”
The department will serve such fare as fried dough, hamburgers and hot sausage beginning at 5:30 p.m. and also plans to have candy apples, cotton candy and other treats for sale. Firefighters will operate small games of chance.
New this year will be beer sales. Live bands will perform from 7 to 10 p.m., with T-Bird and Freddie featured on July 9 and The String Theory taking the stage on July 10.
Attendees may bring their chairs and are asked to maintain social distancing. Face coverings are optional.
A fireworks display will be held at 10 p.m. July 11.
