A Roane County firefighter is dead after he crashed the fire truck he was driving while on his way to a structure fire.

According to WCHS-TV, the incident happened late Saturday evening.

The City of Spencer has identified the fallen volunteer firefighter as Mark Horwich.

“His family, his fire department and our community are devastated by this sudden tragedy. From all of us at the City of Spencer, we extend our sincerest condolences to the loved ones of Mark Horwich. You have our hearts,” the city said in the statement.

There is no word on what caused the crash, though there was an investigation on site. That road was closed for several hours while crews cleared the scene.

According to dispatchers, the fire truck was on its top in the creek when emergency crews arrived.
