Two Tucson firefighters were attacked in the line of duty over the weekend while responding to a medical call.

They were reportedly responding to a home where a man was suffering from abdominal pain on Sunday afternoon. As they were treating the patient, he apparently became “agitated” and pulled out a knife. Officials say the man started threatening the firefighters and they wrestled him to the ground.

Tucson Fire Dept. Capt. Andy Skaggs told KOLD, “Our job is a very dangerous job…Day in and day out, we never know when that’s going to happen and today was an example of that..”

Skaggs said they are extremely lucky the crew members did not suffer life-threatening injuries. They were treated at the hospital for their injuries, but released a few hours later.

KOLD reports the suspect is still in the hospital being treated for his stomach condition and is not being cooperative.

Police say it’s not clear why he attacked the first responders, but as soon as the attacker recovers he’ll be put behind bars and charged with three felony counts of aggravated assault.
