Sussex reduces weekend emergency services

A shortage of doctors has forced the Sussex Health Centre to reduce its emergency services this weekend. The ER will closed from five p.m. until eight a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Dr. Brian Wheelock of Health Region Two said patients in the Sussex area who need emergency care on the weekend will have to go elsewhere.

“They should call 911 if they need immediate attention,” he said. “If they need services that don’t require the ambulance service, then they’ll have to go to the emergency department at the Saint John Regional Hospital, or one of the two emergency departments at the hospitals in Moncton.”

Regular ambulance service is available, however, and it’s not affected by the closure of the emergency department.

Wheelock said the reduction is service was made only after all attempts to cover the weekend shifts failed.

He hopes a new physician scheduled to arrive next month will solve the weekend shortage problem.
