The governor of Washington has declared a wildfire emergency, putting the National Guard on alert.Governor Christine Gregoire (GREG’-wahr) says her state’s facing a siege of wildfires. The worst has blackened 42-thousand acres in southeastern Washington and is about 40-percent contained.
It’s burning toward cabins in the Umatilla (yoo-muh-TIHL’-ah) National Forest. Dozens of homes and outbuildings have been burned.
