Police investigate Sumner fire

Firefighters have brought under control a scrub fire burning on hillsides above the Christchurch suburb of Sumner. The fire broke out in the Heberden Avenue area, with the smoke clearly visible from the central city.

The fire started around 4 o’clock this afternoon, but extinguishing it proved challenging because it had taken hold in thick scrub on steep terrain. That made it hard for fire crews to get their water close to the seat of the fire. However calm weather helped, and emergency crews had the fire under control by about 5 o’clock.

Police are investigating the cause of the fire, and were seen speaking top a group of boys found near where the fire started.
