An elevator in a Bronx building plunged four stories into the basement, killing one person inside and leaving the other critically injured, officials said.

The passenger elevator inside the building on Bruckner Blvd. near Lincoln Ave. in Mott Haven was being used as a freight elevator when it plummeted from the top floor of the four-story building into the basement about 8:15 a.m., FDNY officials said.

One of the two passengers inside the elevator died in the crash, officials said. A second victim was rushed to Lincoln Hospital in critical condition.

An investigation into the incident was underway, officials said.
