George Ray Grant, 66, of Columbia, was found deceased in the room of the fire, according to the release. Another person who was in the residence at the time escaped with minor injuries.

Columbia police and firefighters were dispatched to the fire at a residence in the 200 block of Ruby Ln. at around 10:40 a.m., the release stated. There, officers observed smoke and flames through a rear window of the residence. The fire, which was in the one room and caused “significant damage,” was contained in around five minutes, the release said.

The cause of death will not be determined until further investigation, police said, but as of Monday, no foul play was suspected.
