On The Job – Glen Rock Fire Department

SHARE

A line of severe thunderstorms traveled through Northern New Jersey causing damage and power outages due to downed power lines and fallen trees. Many lightning strikes caused local Fire Departments to take in run after run for alarm activations, minor fires, and few structure fires. One of them was in Glen Rock.

At a little after 6:00 PM, at the height of the storm, the Glen Rock Fire Department was dispatched to South Highwood Ave. for a report of a house struck by lightning with smoke showing. Responding units had to navigate tree limbs and other debris in the streets as well as a heavy downpour. On arrival units found a 2 1/2 story frame dwelling with smoke showing.

A second alarm was called for, but due to a working fire in neighboring Ridgewood, and other towns responding to multiple calls, there was a delay in getting additional units to the scene. Another major problem quickly became apparent as the first two hydrants hit were dead, causing firefighters to stretch to hydrants much further away. These problems gave the fire a good head start and soon fire broke through the roof of a 1 story extension on the “D” side of the building and had spread to the main part of the dwelling. The thunderstorms passed as quickly as they came.

An aggressive interior attack was making very little progress as flames broke through the roof of the dwelling. Firefighters were pulled out of the building as Glen Rock Tower 832 was set up and put into operation to knock down the heavy fire. After all visible fire was knocked down by the tower ladder and exterior streams, firefighters re-entered the building for hitting hot spots and overhaul. No serious injuries were reported. Mutual aid at the scene was provided by Hawthorne, Fair Lawn, and Paramus.

Note: In photo #2, you can see what is left of the tree that took the initial lightning strike.
