Off-duty Rochester firefighter uses his jet ski to put out boat fire

A firefighter in New York State exercised some quick thinking while on the water, using the wake of his jetski to quell a boat fire.

Oscar Herrera was praised by the local firefighters union for volunteering to assist with the vessel fire, which took place on May 20 at Mayer’s Marina on Irondequoit Bay.

“I saw it. Naturally I wanted to see what was going on so I went over and there were a couple of other jet skis basically staring at it and I thought, ‘What can I do to help?’ And I’d seen it on YouTube a couple of times so I wanted to try it myself,” Herrera told WHAM.

Herrera, who works at Engine 10 at Dewey and Ridgeway avenues, used a hard turn to send water over the top of the vessel.

The incident is a rare case where mimicking something you saw on YouTube actually resulted in a good outcome.

It is unknown what property damage costs finally amounted to.
