Pulaski, N.Y. — The Red Carpet Inn caught fire Monday afternoon in the village of Pulaski after a man started cooking goat meat in one of the rooms, authorities said.
Someone called the Oswego County 911 Center at 4:38 p.m. to report a fire at the Red Carpet Inn motel, at 3723 state Route 13.
Members of Pulaski’s volunteer fire department, Ringgold Fire Co., as well as Altmar, Mexico, Richland, Sandy Creek, Orwell, New Haven and Lacona volunteer firefighters, Pulaski village police, Oswego County sheriff’s deputies, state police and Northern Oswego County Ambulance (NOCA) responded to the scene.
Pulaski Village Police Officer Joe Taylor said most people had seen the smoke and had exited the motel safely, but he found two people still inside the motel when he knocked doors. The fire was on the opposite side of the motel, and they didn’t realize there was a fire, Taylor said.
Everybody got out safely and no one was injured, Taylor said.
NOCA ambulance told 911 dispatchers they were transporting one person from the scene to a hospital for an asthma attack, but it was not related to the fire.
Volunteer firefighters told dispatchers the fire was out at 5:26 p.m. — 48 minutes after the initial 911 call, dispatchers said.
The fire started on the south side of the motel, in the back, Taylor said. A man was cooking goat meat on the stove in his motel room when the griddle somehow caught fire, the officer said.
Police blocked a portion of state Route 13 near the motel while firefighters battled the blaze.
