Many people are upset because the Bogue Chitto Volunteer Fire Department reinstated Brad Mercier, a convicted sex offender.
According to USA Today, The fire chief, Sedgie Mercier, had no comment. He is the offender's father.
“We've talked to people about that,” Mercier said when asked for comment about this issue.
Sedgie Mercier was also very clear that he felt that there was nothing that needed to be published about this particular subject.
He stated, “Don't you dare put nothing in no paper. It better get stopped. Who gave you permission to do anything with this?”
State Senator Sally Doty said certain firefighters have approached her with concerns. Doty claims she cannot provide any more information on the subject.
Doty also said, “We are looking into this with an immediate view of determining the best way to handle the situation. I have nothing but respect for our brave and dedicated men and women who volunteer to keep us safe every day.”
There are concerns about a nearby school that houses kindergarteners through 12th-graders. This facility is across the street from the fire station.
Mississippi Department of Public Safety spokesman Warren Strain said that Brad Mercier cannot be on school property.
The fire department's location is not on a school property.
Strain also said, “No law restricts a sex offender from public service. It depends on whatever the court ordered at the time of his conviction.”
Brad Mercier grew up with the fire department along with his family.
In March 2014, Mercier was convicted of two counts of indecent behavior with a juvenile. This conviction was part of a plea deal.
In the initial investigation, in 2008, Brad Mercier was facing one count of computer-aided solicitation for sexual purposes and was also charged with one count of pornography involving juveniles.
An undercover police detective from Kenner, Louisiana was pretending to be an underage girl in an online chatroom. Mercer used the screen name “brad_mercier2000” and asked the undercover detective to have sex with him.
Brad Mercier contacted the individual by telephone and pleasured himself while the two of them were speaking, according to Lieutenant Wayne McInnis, a spokesman for the suburban New Orleans police department. Brad Mercier had also asked the undercover detective to send nude photographs of herself.
