A New Jersey man was charged Monday with setting fire to a home in Ocean County while three people were in the structure, authorities said.

Jamal Preston, 25, of Egg Harbor Township, is charged with attempted murder and four counts of aggravated arson in the incident, which occurred in Lakewood Township, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer.

Police were called Aug. 22 to a home in the township on a report of a major fire. State and local investigators later determined the blaze had been intentionally set with flammable liquid and an open flame, Billhimer said.

Billhimer did not release a possible motive for the crime. Preston was held Monday night in the Ocean County Jail pending a court hearing, the prosecutor said.
