The body of a firefighter who went missing while battling a massive blaze at a suburban New York assisted living home was recovered from the rubble early Wednesday, officials said.
Rockland County Human Rights Commissioner Rabbi Yisroel Kahan identified the fallen firefighter as Jared Lloyd, a 15 year veteran of the Spring Valley Fire Department.
Lloyd was located around 1 a.m. as crews worked around the clock searching for his body in the burned remains of the Evergreen Court for Adults in Spring Valley, Rockland County.
His remains were found about 24 hours after the fire broke out Wednesday morning, killing a resident.
The resident has yet to be identified.
“Early this morning the recovery efforts were successful and the body of a fallen firefighter, a hero for all, was recovered and removed with great solemnity by his fellow brothers and sisters in the fire and emergency services,” Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann wrote on Facebook early Wednesday.
“This is an extraordinarily difficult time for the fire services within Rockland County. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bravest and the fellow firefighters of Spring Valley who lost a brother today.”
Lloyd was one of the first firefighters to respond to the fire. As he fought the blaze, he called in a mayday from the third floor after heading upstairs to help a female resident. Fellow first responders tried to get to him but were repelled from finding their trapped comrade by the raging blaze.
Two firefighters were hospitalized but one was quickly released, according to officials. At least 20 residents suffered minor injuries and were taken to surrounding hospitals.
Local police, firefighters and building staff emptied the burning building’s 112 residents when the fire broke out.
Between 25 and 30 residents were saved by first responders, with some of the rescued carried from the flames or led through the smoke to safety, officials said.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation Wednesday.
