The Milwaukee Fire Department made history this week when they named Sharon Purifoy as its new EMS Chief. Purifoy becomes the Department’s first black, and female, Deputy Chief of EMS.

According to Spectrum News, Purifoy has been with the Department for the last 18 years. She worked her way through the ranks, from firefighter, lieutenant, battalion chief, and now EMS Chief.

“Me being the first was just the tip of the iceberg. The fire service, the Milwaukee fire department, has so many opportunities for people who look like me; I want the ladies to know that they can do this too,” Purifoy says.

The Department has been in business for 175 years. The current Fire Chief believes he will see more women of color like Purifoy rise through the ranks.
