Toys “R” Us has issued a recall on a Tonka truck, after a Washington family reported the toy caused their real pick-up truck to burst into flames.
The Bellingham family said they bought the Tonka 12V Ride-On Dump Truck on Friday, as a Christmas gift for their grandson. The “mighty” truck’s features include: “Two passenger seats,
forward and backward driving functionality, real working dump for enhanced play, 12V rechargeable battery and max speed of 5 MPH.”
Delmond Harden told local media that the toy truck caught fire twice. First, he says, it burst into flames while on their drive home. They doused the fire themselves at a rest area.
But on their way back to Toys “R” Us, it reignited again in the back of their pick-up, setting fire to their vehicle.
That’s when firefighters were called in to help put out the flames. “It just about shut I-5 down… who would know a defective truck,” Harden said.
The toy giant has issued the family a refund and has pulled the Tonka truck from store shelves.
It appears that this was an isolated incident, officials with the store said. However, they are implementing a stop-sale pending further investigation.
A spokeswoman for Toys “R” Us told NBC News they are working closely with the manufacturer of the toy to determine the cause.
