Mallorca – Fire fighting pilot killed

SHARE

A pilot flying a water-bombing plane has been killed when his aircraft crashed while fighting a fire in Mallorca. “He was going to put out a fire and he was killed after crashing,” a spokesman said. The Air Tractor from the Balearic Nature Institute probably crashed because of poor visibility or loss of control.

The fatality takes to 14 the number of firefighters killed in action this summer in Spain, which is experiencing its worst drought in 60 years.

A pilot died on August 6 after crashing into a mountain while fighting a fire near Orense in north-western Spain, and a firefighter was killed by a rockfall in the central province of Avila.
