Jury indicts W.Deptford firefighter

A 19-year-old volunteer firefighter has been indicted by a Gloucester County grand jury for setting two brush fires in West Deptford. Justin J. Rieger, of Verga, was arrested on May 8 after brush behind the RiverWinds Community Center had been set on fire, authorities said.

A police officer spotted a truck with a blue firefighter’s light on the dashboard leaving the scene of the fire and another officer pulled the truck over. Authorities said Rieger admitted starting that fire and another at the Verga Veterans of Foreign Wars Post on April 14.

Rieger had been a volunteer with the Verga Fire Co. for about four months. After his arrest, he was suspended from the fire company. He is charged with third-degree arson.
