A 36-year-old man was seriously injured after falling 35 feet from a wall that borders the Indianapolis Zoo.

The injured man called 911 at 11:48 p.m. Tuesday and told dispatchers he fell from a wall near the zoo, Indianapolis Fire Department Battalion Chief Rita Reith said.

The man said he wasn’t sure exactly where he was.

“He told firefighters that he sat on the wall, fell asleep and when he woke up he had fallen off the wall,” Reith said. “It is unclear why he was on the property or how long he had been there.”

Firefighters found him at 12:06 a.m. Wednesday. They used ropes and a rescue basket to lift the man to safety at 1:10 a.m.

The man was taken to Eskenazi Hospital with serious injuries, Reith said.
