Gainesville Fire Rescue Joke Turns Sour

Gainesville authorities are investigating a practical joke – and they’re questioning their own employees about it. A cardboard cylinder was found duct-taped beneath a Gainesville Fire Rescue truck. Interim Deputy Chief Gene Prince says a bomb squad was called to the scene and later determined the cylinder was safe.

The fire official says the incident was meant to be a practical joke, but it could lead to possible disciplinary action ranging from a written reprimand to termination against those responsible.

Gainesville Police Department spokesman Sergeant Keith Kameg says police are still looking into the incident and have some leads, but maintains that the incident was a prank.

The police official says the so-called prank cost taxpayers between five and 10-thousand dollars, and the costs adds up each day they spend time investigating.
