Fire damaged several houses and forced the evacuation of hundreds of tourists but caused no injuries, fire authorities said. Whipped by strong winds, the fire raced through pine forests after breaking out Thursday morning at a garbage dump near the beach town of Aghia Paraskevi on the island of Skiathos’s southwestern coast.
It was being fought by 80 firefighters – including 50 from special units brought in by transport plane with seven fire trucks, along with three water-dropping planes and two helicopters. Later another four airplanes were flown in from Athens to help battle the blazes, while 40 additional firefighters were expected by evening.
