A Maryland firefighter-paramedic thwarted a carjacking at Takoma Park hospital on Sunday, after the suspect involved attacked a female nurse and tried to steal an ambulance.
The suspect, Christopher Broadus, was wielding a knife when he attempted to steal Montgomery County Medical Unit 701, which was idling in the ambulance bay. Prior to his attack, he had just been released by the hospital for an undisclosed issue.
According to WJLA, Fire Medic Diego De Abreu Peclat Dos Santos (who goes by Plecat), noticed the incident taking place and stepped in.
Using his experience in mixed-martial arts, Plecat disarmed Broadus and took him to the ground, allowing hospital security to take him into custody.
It is believed that Broadus was under the influence of PCP.
Plecat suffered minor injuries but is now being lauded as a hero by his fellow firefighters.
“Here you had an assault, an attempted carjacking,” said Pete Piringer, spokesman for the Montgomery County Fire Rescue Service. “I like sandwiches, but I don’t like knuckle sandwiches, and it looks that’s probably what this guy got.”
