A Los Angeles County firefighter has died following a fall Saturday morning in downtown Los Angeles.

The firefighter, identified for NBC News by the Los Angeles Fire Department as Kelly Wong, fell at about 10 a.m. Saturday.

Wong was initially treated by his colleagues on scene and transported to a nearby trauma center, said Amy Bastman, a spokeswoman for the department.

Wong is survived by his wife and infant son.

NBC News reports Wong was a two-year veteran of the department assigned to Station 92 in Rancho Park. He was set for transfer to Station 9 in downtown Los Angeles this month.

“I join the men and women of the LAFD in mourning Firefighter Wong’s sudden passing,” LAFD Chief Ralph Terrazas tells NBC News. “It is always a tragedy to lose one of our own, especially an accomplished individual who was still at the beginning of what was certainly going to be a promising career.”
