An ex-fire chief from Virginia was indicted on embezzlement charges after he stole money from the Natural Bridge Volunteer Fire Department.

27-year-old Justin Garrett was charged with two counts of embezzlement and two counts of conspiracy to embezzle between May and June 2018.

The former treasurer, Robert Newman, was charged with 15 counts of embezzlement over a one year period.

Around $166,000 of the station’s funds were taken from the station and did not go to updating equipment that had worn out.

“This has a tremendous impact on them financially,” Rockbridge County Fire & Rescue Chief Nathan Ramsey told the Roanoke Times. “It’s a lot of money and it’s something they’ve worked hard for years and years to build up.”

The 20-man department manages around 500 calls a year.
