An Oregon fire chief has resigned in order to prevent several of his firefighters from being laid off.

Ashland Fire Department Chief Mike D’Orazi submitted his resignation in order to slash the budget, which the city wanted to cut by several hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The now-former fire chief decided the city could use the savings from his salary to keep the other firefighters on staff.

According to a statement released on Facebook by the Ashland Firefighters Local 1269, D’Orazi’s resignation was made effective on Tuesday.
