The Big Apple is awash in civil service scandal yet again, after a pregnant FDNY worker called Mayor Bill de Blasio and asked why she doesn’t get paid maternity leave, despite new healthcare initiatives by the mayor that even extend to illegal immigrants.
FDNY trauma specialist Jesse [redacted] called into de Blasio’s WNYC radio show and popped the question, one day after the egotistical mayor used up over half of his State of the City speech to brag about his accomplishments.
“How is the state and the city government implementing an act that requires private employers to provide something for the city and the government that the city and the government refuses to provide for their own workers?” she asked.
De Blasio seemed as if he could care less, according to the New York Post, pressing it as a union issue.
“We made an announcement well over a year ago that any union representing our city employees who wants to come forward and come to an understanding on paid parental leave, we’re ready to do that,” he said. “If your union wants to right now negotiate that with us, we’re ready.”
In January of 2016, however, de Blasio sang a different tune, signing a paid parental leave policy for 20,000 municipal managerial workers who are not represented by unions.
“Paid parental leave simply should not be a luxury, it’s something every family needs,” the mayor said at the time. “And it is part of our fight to support working families in New York City.”
