Defensive driving averts accident

We were responding to a structure fire involving a poultry barn. At an intersection, our engine came to a full stop. Traffic was stopped to our north and east. A small hill was to our west with no vehicles present. As we went to turn east, an engine from another responding agency topped the hill with its lights flashing, but no siren. The two engines just missed each other by a few feet.

Lessons Learned

I don’t think there was any way to know the apparatus from both departments were there at the same time. If anything, the engine coming from the west should have had its siren on.
