Bank robbery suspect hides under Vancouver house, needs firefighters to cut him out

Sept. 26Vancouver police got their man this week, but only after becoming stuck in the crawl space under a home with a suspected bank robber and being extricated by firefighters.

Police responded Thursday afternoon to a 911 call from neighbors in the Orchards area reporting that they had seen Steven Eric Lewis Jennings, who was wanted in connection with a robbery at a US Bank branch earlier in the month.

Police surrounded the house and ordered Jennings to surrender, then sent in a K-9 unit to help search. Police determined that Jennings was likely in a crawl space under the home. Two officers shimmied under the home on their bellies, past some broken water pipes, and crawled from one end of the house to the other.

They located Jennings but were unable to evacuate him the way they'd come in. So firefighters were called in to cut a hole in the floor of the house.

Everyone was removed through the hole safely. Jennings, 35, was transported to the hospital to get medically cleared before being booked into Clark County Jail on robbery charges.
