5 firefighters injured in crash driving between wildfires

DURANGO – Five firefighters traveling between wildfires in Colorado were hospitalized Thursday evening after a crash on Interstate 25 near Fort Collins, a U.S. Forest Service official said.

Agency spokesman Lawrence Lujan said the firefighters had just left the Cold Springs fire in the Arapaho and Roosevelt national forests when they crashed Thursday. The interagency crew was headed to fight the larger Hayden Pass fire near Canon City.

Lujan did not share the extent of the firefighters’ injuries nor the circumstances of the crash.

More information is expected to be released Thursday night. Check back at gazette.com for updates.
