A 4-year-old boy drowned in a pool in Southbridge on Sunday, according to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office and the Southbridge Fire Department.

District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. released a short statement on Twitter Sunday night stating the child drowned in a private pool in Southbridge.

Early said Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to his office and Southbridge police are investigating the death which appears to be an accidental drowning.

The Southbridge Fire Department said firefighters were called to 48 Sunnyhill Road around 4:07 p.m. for a report of a child at the bottom of a pool.

Southbridge Fire Department paramedics arrived on scene four minutes later to find a Southbridge police officer performing CPR on the boy.

“The resuscitation efforts were continued while on scene by our paramedics and advanced level of care was continued throughout the transport to Harrington Memorial Hospital in Southbridge,” the fire department said.

Fire officials said the boy unfortunately died despite the efforts by first responders to save him.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of this young boy,” Fire Chief Paul F. Normandin Jr. said.
