One person was pronounced dead and several others were injured after a fire on Victory Boulevard in Portsmouth on Wednesday night, according to a news release from Portsmouth Fire Rescue & Emergency Services.
Thirteen people were displaced from the fire from four apartments.
Firefighters responded to the apartment building in the 1100 block of Victory Boulevard at 10:13 p.m.
When crews got to the scene, a fire was visible from the front porch and it was upgraded to a second-alarm fire, according to the release. A child had been rescued by a neighbor before the fire department got there. Then crews rescued three others and three dogs.
Three adults and two children had injuries. Two of the adults were taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and one later died there, according to the release. One child was taken to Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in serious but stable condition. The three dogs died at the scene.
All four apartments in the building had substantial fire damage. The fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the fire. It was marked under control at 11:11 p.m.
The American Red Cross is helping the 13 people displaced from the fire.
